1946 Elections and Independence

  • The Unionist Party of Punjab and Haryana got weakened before the elections of 1946. Consequently, in the election, Muslim League got 75 seats, Congress got 51 seats, Akali dal got 22 seats and Unionist Party got 20 seats. Independent candidates won on 7 places.
  • Congress formed the government with the support of Unionist Party. Chaudhary Lahri Singh, the Congress Leader from Haryana was a part of this government.
  • The demand for the creation of a separate Pakistan was increased with the successful representation of the Muslim League in the 1946 elections.
  • There were communal riots in Punjab. Thousands of people from both communities (Hindu and Muslim) were killed. The riots in Mewat region were more severe.
  • During the 1946 elections, the Western part of Punjab was Muslim dominated area and the Eastern part of Punjab and Haryana were the Hindu dominated areas. Here the communal tension was at its peak, thus, many communal riots took place.
